SUNY Potsdam weekly sports recap


POTSDAM - The Potsdam fall sports teams were all in action this past week.


The golf team competed in the SUNY Canton Invitational on Tuesday and closed out their season at the ECAC qualifier over the weekend. Junior Harrison Davenport (Auburn, N.Y.) shot a 75 to lead the Bears to a 1st place finish at Canton. At the ECAC event, freshman John Hickey (AuSable Forks, N.Y.) tied for ninth with rounds of 77 and 80 for a 157. Senior Matt Supernault (Massena, N.Y. ) tied for 11th, just a stroke behind at 158 (77/81). Sophomore Austin Pivetta (Chateaugay, N.Y.) was next with a 168 (83/85). Senior Andrew Holmes (Fort Ann, N.Y.) and freshman Conor Talty (Fairport, N.Y.) rounded out the group with 170 (91/79) and 171 (84/87), respectively.


The Potsdam men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the SLU Hoffman Invitational on Saturday. The women finished seventh, while the men were ninth. Freshman Hannah Groshner (Wayland, N.Y.) led the Potsdam women, finishing with a time of 26:16.3.

Freshman Olivia Rehm (Grahamsville, N.Y.) completed the course in 27:13.7. Freshman Sarah Howe (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) and junior Sara Behuniak (Latham, N.Y.) rounded out the top four in 30:53.6 and 34:05.1, respectively. Junior John Stone (Norwood, N.Y.) paced the men with a time of 31:09.06. Junior Dalijah Demand (Troy, N.Y.) and sophomore Joseph Rafter (Fort Covington, N.Y.) were the next two Potsdam finishers in 31:49.82 and 32:04.22. Junior James Burton (Pittsford, N.Y.) crossed the line in 32:55.87 and sophomore Jonathan Doane (Camden, N.Y.) closed out the top five with a time of 33:12.93.


The SUNY Potsdam Volleyball team faced St. Lawrence at home on Tuesday and traveled to the Union Invitational over the weekend. The Bears split 2-2 during the tournament and have a 16-10 overall record. The week resulted in several season high totals and three five set matches. Freshman outside hitter Rachel Auerbach (Ashburn, Va.) recorded a season high 18 kills when the Bears defeated the Saints 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Junior setter Jenna Blujus (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) added a season best performance of 10 kills, 47 assists, and 23 digs against Union. Junior middle hitter Sara Anderson (Lake George, N.Y.) added her season high of 19 kills in the same match Saturday morning. Blujus, also, earned All-Tournament honors for her performance over the weekend.


The women’s soccer team traveled to SUNYAC opponents Oneonta State and SUNY New Paltz over the weekend. Oneonta scored early to take control of the game to defeat the Bears 4-0 on Friday. The Bears battled in the second game of their road slate. Potsdam kept the game within reach as New Paltz could not get by the defense in the first half. The Hawks were able to score late in the contest to claim the lead and the 2-0 decision.


The men’s soccer team fell twice over the weekend. The Bears dropped their first game 1-0 to Oneonta State in a close contest. Potsdam had several opportunities late in the game but could not get the equalizer. The Bears lost 3-1 to SUNY New Paltz in the final game of the weekend. Junior Alessio Vitale (Liverpool, N.Y.) scored the lone goal for Potsdam to tie the game at the 48:20 mark. However, New Paltz was able to stop the Bears second half momentum and score two more times to put the game out of reach.


Junior Alessio Vitale is the Bears’ male performer of the week. Vitale scored the lone goal for the Bears in the second game versus New Paltz. He buried the goal off of a nice pass by teammate Eduardo Figueroa.

Freshman Rachel Auerbach is the Bears’ female performer of the week.

Auerbach tallied 68 kills, nine assists, eight service aces, 16 digs and finished with an overall hitting percentage of .312. She led the Bears to a 3-2 victory at home versus St. Lawrence with a season high 18 kills.

Also, Auerbach helped the Bears finish 2-2 over the weekend at the Union Invitational.


Cross Country will run on Saturday, when they travel to Geneva for the Cross Country Only Championships.

The Bears volleyball team returns to action Friday when they travel to the Ithaca Invitational to face Fredonia State in the first match at 5 p.m.

The men’s soccer team heads to Western New York to continue their SUNYAC slate. Potsdam faces Buffalo State at 4 p.m. on Friday and Fredonia on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The women’s soccer team returns home next weekend to host Buffalo and Fredonia. The Bears face the Bengals at 4 p.m. on Friday and the Blue Devils at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
