Massena Central gridmen run past Canton

MASSENA - Massena scored early and often in defeating Canton 48-14 in the Northern Athletic Conference regular season football finale for each team on Friday night on Mike Nicholas Field.

The Raiders and Golden Bears won’t have to look hard for game film of on their first-round playoff opponent as the two will meet again this coming Friday night on Nicholas Field in the first round of the Section 10 Tier II playoffs.

Massena (3-4) is the fourth seed while Canton (0-7) is the eighth seed for the playoffs. After the Raiders vie for Tier II honors, they will meet sectional top-seed Potsdam for the right to go to the New York State Class A playoffs.

Last night, Massena led 20-0 in the first quarter as Tyler Simms hauled in an 18-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Rory Corcoran on the Raiders’ opening drive, Jordy Mitchell rushed in from 17 yards out after a Canton turnover and Jeremiah Reagan raced 26 yards to paydirt on Massena’s next possession.

Massena added two more six-pointers in the second quarter as Corcoran threw his second touchdown pass of the night, 23 yards to Justin Bestor, while Isaiah Perry rushed 15 yards to the end zone. In between the two Massena touchdowns, Canton got on the board when quarterback Jack Elberty hit Hunter Yerdon for a 63-yard scoring strike.

Massena scored the lone points of the third quarter when Bestor moved to quarterback and raced 84 yards up the middle. In the fourth quarter, Bestor rushed in from 25 yards out before the Bears closed out the scoring on a one-yard sweep to the end zone by Yerdon who finished with a game-high 131 yards rushing on 18 carries.

For Massena, Bestor rushed 116 yards on just three carries and had two pass receptions for 46 yards. Also for the Raiders, Jeremy Malone rushed eight times for 74 yards, Reagan rushed eight times for 73 yards while Perry ran six times for 65 yards. The Raider defense stopped the Bears twice inside the 10 yard line, once on a Bestor interception in the end zone and once on downs.

Xavier Viskovich had a fumble recovery for Massena which honored its nine seniors before the game. They include Justin Bestor, Jordan Hart, Ben Light, Jordy Mitchell, Isaiah Perry, Kioweren Rourke, Tyler Simms, Sam Sprague and Nick White.
