Clarkson women skate past Vermont

POTSDAM - Junior Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, ONT) scored two specialty-team goals and recorded one assist to lead the seventh-ranked Clarkson University women’s hockey team to a convincing 4-1 victory over the University of Vermont in non-conference action at Cheel Arena on Friday night.

The Golden Knights, who have won three straight to open their 10th season of NCAA Hockey, will battle the Catamounts (1-2) again on Saturday afternoon in a 4 p.m. start in Potsdam.

Clarkson was all over Vermont in the first period outshooting the Catamounts 19-5 in the opening frame, but it was the visitors who grabbed the initial lead late in the stanza. Capitalizing on a fortunate bounce off an official’s skate in front of the Clarkson goal, UVM’s Sarah Campbell knocked in her first goal of the season at 15:36. Klara Myren earned the assist.

The Knights’ hard work finally paid off in the second frame as Clarkson connected for three unanswered goals to hold a 3-1 advantage through 40 minutes.

Junior Brittany Styner (Calgary, ALB) started the Clarkson outburst with her first goal of the season at 6:08, converting a pass out of the corner by Rattray for a power-play tally from the left circle at 6:08. Freshman defenseman Erin Ambrose (Keswick, ONT) also assisted. The Green and Gold struck again on the man-advantage at 8:47 as Rattray jammed in a shot at the side of the net. Junior captain Carly Mercer (Exeter, ONT) and Styner assisted. Rattray tallied again with an unassisted shorthanded score at 9:21 for her third goal of the season.

Freshman defenseman Renata Fast (Burlington, ONT) closed out the scoring with the Knights’ third power-play goal of the night and her first collegiate goal on a blast from the point at 14:03 of the final period. Junior Vanessa Plante (Riviere-du-Loup, QUE) and senior assistant captain Hailey Wood (Lethbridge, ALB) assisted.

Clarkson dominated throughout the contest holding a 47-16 advantage in shots. Junior Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) turned aside 15 shots. Roxanne Douville posted 43 saves for UVM.

Minnesota 5, SLU 0: Amanda Kessel scored the first and last goals of the game as the top-ranked University of Minnesota women’s hockey team defeated St. Lawrence University in a nonconference game at Appleton Arena.

The Golden Gophers (5-0 overall) outshot SLU 36-27.

Sarah Davis, Milica McMillen and Hannah Brandt also scored for the Golden Gophers. Noora Raty had an assist and made 27 saves to shut out the Saints (0-3).
