Massena girls settle for scoreless Central Division tie with Canton


CANTON - A steady autumn breeze made have been a factor but it didn’t wind up making a difference as the Massena Central varsity girls soccer team settled for a scoreless tie on the road against Canton in an NAC Central Division matchup on Monday.

Senior Dominique Valancius, a leading offensive threat for the Lady Raiders, was pressed into service as the starting goaltender due to the absence of sophomore Courtney Manley due to a prior commitment and responded by handled the nine shots on net that she faced to record the shutout. Freshman Katie Clemmer finished with 13 saves backstopping the Canton (5-4-1).

The Lady Raiders (10-1-0, 9-0-0) are slated to host Potsdam Central on Thursday under the lights at Mike Nicholas Field starting a 6:30 p.m.

In other Central Division games on Monday, Salmon River dropped a 1-0 overtime decision at Gouverneur and Franklin Academy blanked OFA 3-0.

Gouverneur 1, Salmon River 0 (2OT): In Gouverneur, Jessey Parker finished off a play set up by Kara Cummings one minutes into the first 10-minute overtime and the Lady Wildcats (2-5-4, 2-4-3) made it stand for the win.

Taylor Andrews had three saves for the shutout while Sam Ghostlaw stopped 12 shots for the Lady Shamrocks (1-8-1, 0-6-1).

FA 3, OFA 0: In Malone, Morgan Fountain opened the scoring in the 29th minute off an assist from Annie Sharlow the closed it out three minutes into the second half assisted by Alyssa Tatro to lead the winning effort. Lydia Cosgrove finished off a play set up by Maggie Albu with 3:14 left in the first half to account for the other goal.

Jayme Lavoie stopped seven shots for FA (3-8-1, 2-6-1). Erica Chase (3 saves) and Kristen Snyder (6 saves) shared crease duties for OFA (4-3-4, 3-3-2).


In NAC interdivision games on Monday, Colton-Pierrepont outscored Edwards-Knox 5-1 and Madrid-Waddington blanked St. Lawrence Central 3-0.

M-W 3, SLC 0: In Madrid, Taylor Lenney finished off a play set up by Katie Marcellus and Emily Doelger with less than four minutes left in the first half and the Lady Yellowjackets made it hold up as the game-winner. Lenney made it 2-0 from Marcellus 21 minutes into the second half before Kaleigh Field closed out the scoring from Blake Orosz with 12 minutes left in regulation.

Shelby Kendall had seven saves for M-W (5-3-0, 3-2-0) while Haleigh Agans stopped 12 shots for SLC (1-8-1, 1-4).

C-P 5, E-K 1: In South Colton, the Lady Colts (3-7-1) raced out to a 3-0 halftime lead en route to turning back the Lady Cougars (2-9).

Morgan Doyle and Kylie McKinley each tallied a goal and assist in the balanced effort. Maia Knight, Andrea Aldous and Sabrina Johnson had the other C-P goals while Autumn Clark, Kelsi Gilbert and Rachael Vaccaro each logged solo assists.

Harleigh LaBarge converted on a penalty kick 14 minutes into the second half for what turned out to be the lone E-K goal.

Kathryn Miller made six saves backstopping the win while Kaylee Hovey fielded 12 shots in the loss.


In the West Division encounters, Hammond edged Clifton-Fine 2-1, Hermon-DeKalb beat Morristown 7-1 and Heuvelton battled Harrisville to a scoreless draw.
