CANTON — Torrey L. Merrick, 18, of 401 County Route 30, Lisbon, was arrested by village police early Sunday after a high-speed chase through Canton.

Police said they saw Mr. Merrick spinning his tires on West Main Street, and followed him as he turned onto Riverside Drive. He then allegedly ignored a red light, swerved across the center line and began to speed.

When police tried to stop him, he sped up and led police onto County Route 27, reaching speeds of more than 80 mph, they said. He lost control while trying to take a sharp corner and crashed into several trees in the front yard of 6403 County Route 27, police said. Neither he nor his passenger was injured.

Mr. Merrick was charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and numerous other related charges. His blood alcohol content was measured at 0.12 percent, police said. Under state law, a BAC of 0.08 percent or more is considered proof of intoxication.
