Massena volleyball team turns back Tupper Lake

MASSENA - The Massena Central varsity girls’ volleyball team posted its second NAC sweep in as many nights on Monday, turning back Tupper Lake by scores of 25-15, 25-17, 25-15.

Janisa Benedict anchored the Lady Raider effort with 16 kills, 10 points, six blocks and three aces. Tristan Thomas contributed 15 assists, seven points and three kills. Samanntha Villnave added seven kills and two blocks while Alex Sardella chipped in another six service points.

Now 10-2 overall, the Lady Raiders are slated to host Salmon River on Thursday starting at 6 p.m.

In other NAC matches on Tuesday, Chateaugay swept Salmon River 25-13, 25-11, 25-23 and Franklin Academy (10-3) stopped Brushton-Moira (1-12) in three straight (25-15, 25-22, 25-17). In a match staged on Monday, Canton outlasted Potsdam in five sets.

Chateaugay 3, Salmon River 0: In Fort Covington, Nicole Smoke led the way for the Lady Shamrocks (10-3) with nine points, five assists and three kills. Kasennakohe David and Wakie Mitchell chipped in three kills apiece.

Canton 3, Potsdam 2: At the Potsdam high school gym, the host Lady Sandstoners dropped the first two sets 25-17, 25-20 but regrouped to take the next two 25-16, 25-14, before the Lady Bears claimed the decisive fifth set 25-14.

Rachel Sanderson tallied 12 points, 12 assists and 10 kills to anchor the Canton (7-4) effort. Cianna Willmart worked the net for 10 kills. Also contributing for the Lady Bears were Sara Olin (6 kills, 3 assists, 3 points), Tara Facey (15 assists, 9 points, 5 kills, 2 aces) and Kaeli Mace (9 kills, 3 points).
