MASSENA – Mrs. Hazel C. Jawan, 92, formerly of Roosevelt Street, passed away early Tuesday morning, October 16, 2012 at the St. Regis Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since April 2011.

Hazel was born November 15, 1919, in Brushton, the daughter of the late Fred and Mabel Manning Allen. She was a 1937 graduate of Brushton High School. On October 25, 1939, Hazel married Edward W. Jawan in Brushton with Pastor Jasper Hamn, officiating. He predeceased her on April 22, 1986. Hazel once worked at the Highland Nursing Home and also worked as a “Candy Striper” at Massena Memorial Hospital for many years. She was gifted with a beautiful voice and shared her gift with the Sweet Adelines traveling around New York State. Hazel loved unconditionally, cooked without measuring, and suffered silently. Regardless of the all the losses she endured with the death of her husband, all four of her children, and all her siblings, her faith never waivered, having been baptized again at the age of 80. She truly loved spending time with her grandchildren and gardening.

She is survived by her loving grandchildren, Robert “Marty” Capell, Tracy L. Mineo, Lisa Santaniello, Bobby Jo Serafino, Jody L. Santamaria, William, Kim, Scott, Kevin, and Bryan Jawan, Kyle, Joshua, and Paige Jordan; 25 great grandchildren, many great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Hazel was predeceased by her four children, William J. Jawan on October 12, 1965; James Edward Jawan on November 14, 1988; Linda J. Capell on November 10, 1987; and Christine Jordan on April 8, 1994; her siblings, Henrietta Watson, Marcia Besio, Edith Hamilton, Nellie Henry, Marjorie, Ronald, Fred, Oswald, Frederick, Kenneth, and Grant Allen.

Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, Friday 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM with a funeral service to follow at 12:00 PM at the Emmanuel Congregational United Church of Christ, West Orvis Street, Massena, with Rev. Judy VanKennan, officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Area 2.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the St. Regis Nursing Home Activities Fund, 89 Grove Street, Massena, NY 13662.
