POTSDAM — St. Lawrence Chocolates will close next month after nearly six years in business.

Owners Thomas W. and Ellen M. Nesbitt announced earlier this month they wished to sell the business, but while a few people expressed interest, none were able to make it work, Ms. Nesbitt said.

“It’s sad. We’re disappointed, would have liked to carry on, but the way things are, it just didn’t work out,” Ms. Nesbitt said.

The shop, which sells custom creams and chocolates, opened at 8 Main St. in 2006, but was unable to recoup the costs of the initial investment.

The store will close on or before Nov. 23, depending on how quickly they sell their remaining merchandise.

“It all depends on how much we get rid of, and how fast we get rid of it,” Ms. Nesbitt said.

It’s not just the remaining candy for sale. All of the store’s furniture and equipment will have a price tag.

“Everything is going to go, all of the fixtures, all of the equipment.”

The Nesbitts are not planning any new entrepreneurial endeavors. They both plan to focus on their full-time jobs at SUNY Potsdam.

The future of the location at 8 Main St. is uncertain. The Nesbitts rented the space, and it is unknown who, if anyone, will fill it in their absence.

Even though the store is closing, Ms. Nesbitt said she wants to thank all the customers who visited.

“Thanks for the six sweet years,” she said.
