MASSENA - A Massena man is listed in critical condition at the Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Vt., after his vehicle slammed into a vehicle late Monday night on Bayley Road.

Village police said Nicholas Sherman, 26, of Massena was backing into a shared driveway at 23-25 Bayley Road near the crest of a hill when his 1992 BMW was struck by a northbound motorcycle operated by Nicholas Newtown, 20, of Route 56, Massena.

Police said the bike went down and skidded several feet before striking the BMW. Mr. Newtown was lodged under the BMW, and a passerby quickly jacked up the car to free the Massena man, who suffered serious leg trauma and other injuries in the crash. He was transported to Massena Memorial Hospital by Massena Rescue following the 11:28 p.m. accident and then was airlifted to Burlington, Vt.

Massena Village Police Chief Timmy J. Currier said the investigation into the accident is continuing, and tickets are pending.
