POTSDAM - Playing well and finishing well were two distinct items in Tuesday night’s dramatic showdown for the NAC West Division Girls Volleyball between Ogdensburg Free Academy and Potsdam.

Finishing well distinguished the Stoners (9-1 West, 11-5) who claimed three highly competitive games 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 to earn the division title, the number two Class C seed for the Section 10 Tournament and the right to host Thursday’s semi-final match with the third-seeded Devils (8-2, 10-6).

Salmon River (5-4 East, 11-4) earned the number one Class C seed and Canton (7-3 West, 9-7), which downed Gouverneur on Thursday, is the fourth seed and will host fifth seeded Gouverneur on Tuesday.

“I was very proud of the way the girls played today. We played well but finishing well without errors was something that we have to work on,” said OFA Coach Sue McLean after the Stoners claimed their second win of the season over OFA.

“Potsdam played excellent defense and a lot of what we sent at them they returned. You can’t give a team like that points on mistakes. Tonight we made some mistakes at the end of games.”

The Stoners played with excellent poise and controlled emotion throughout the game led by their floor leader and energizer Victoria Mondragon who delivered 12 points, five aces and five kills and Bridget Parks who picked up six assists on 27 sets.

“It was our Senior Night so it was very emotional and the girls always get up for playing Ogdensburg. We have developed a great rivalry and I am sure that they always get up to play us,” said Potsdam Coach Julia Pahler who honored seven seniors before the match in Hailey and Taylor Bonno, Bridget Parks, Biz Smith, Olivia Stitzer, Kelsey Travis and manager Jessica Buckley.

“Victoria Mondragon always gives us great energy and leadership as one of our captains along with Bridget Parks and Taylor Bono.

Felicia Barr (11 kills, 3 digs, 4 points, 1 block) paced the Devils with an emphatic hitting effort and Brittany Barr led the scoring with 12 points to go along with seven digs and five kills. Olivia Bender passed out 17 assists with four digs and Emma Hart supplied five digs and four points. Other contributions came from: Taylor Fisher (3 kills, 3 points), Katrina Couperus (5 digs), Sky Hoover (4 points, 1 kill, 1 dig), Jade Casey (1 kill), Shanice Walker (1 dig, 1 point) and Adrianna Compo (2 digs).

Canton 3 - Gouverneur 0: The Bears prevailed 25-12, 25-17, 25-10 led by Beth Pearson (4 kills, 8 points, 3 aces), Tara Facey (5 assists, 13 points, 3 aces), Kaeli Mace (2 kills, 13 points, 5 aces) and Sara Olin (8 points, 1 kill)

The Canton JVs recorded a 25-20, 25-17, 25-16 sweep led by Christy Sebring (11 points 3 kills), Angelina Vechio (6 points, 4 aces) and Emma Warner (2 kills, 4 aces).

Edwards-Knox 3, Madrid-Waddington 2: The host Cougars needed the distance to defeat Madrid-Waddington 18-25, 25-7, 20-25, 25-23, 25-18 in a Class D matchup.
