MADRID – New Beginnings thrift store is halfway to its goal of building a new food and clothing facility for needy families in St. Lawrence County.
The Thanks for My Job, campaign is the latest effort by New Beginnings volunteers to raise money for a new thrift shop building at its current location, 360 County Route 14.
Its hard to imagine how devastating its going to be for parents to wake up on Thanksgiving Day not knowing if and when there will be another pay check, said Phyllis McDougall, chair of the New Beginnings board. Were thankful that weve been able to help so many people, but we are limited in keeping pace with the growing need because of the dilapidated old barn we work out of.
New Beginnings is asking everyone with steady income to give $12 to help expand its services to help struggling families.
We chose $12 because were in 2012, and we thought it was a reasonable amount that almost every employed person could afford, Ms. McDougall said.
Each donation of $12 or more, for up to $2,500, will be matched in honor of the Finnegan family of Madrid.
So far $60,000, or half of the funds needed for the project, has been raised.
New Beginnings has provided clothing and food for families throughout the county since it was founded in 1989 by three local churches: The United Church of Madrid, St. John The Baptist Catholic Church, Madrid, and the Scotch Presbyterian Church in Chipman.
St. Lawrence is one of the poorest counties in the state with 23 percent of the children living below the poverty level, which is why expanding the store is imperative, Ms. McDougall said.
So many of us have so much to be thankful for, Ms. McDougall said. With unemployment above 10 percent, families are really struggling right now. So if your cupboards are full and your children are well nourished, before you rush out the door to get to work on time, please think about those who are desperately searching the want ads looking for a job.
Donations may be mailed to New Beginnings Building Fund to P.O. Box 142, Madrid, N.Y., 13660. All gifts are tax-deductible.
