Salmon River, Potsdam volleyball teams reach Class C finals


Salmon River swept past Canton while Potsdam Central outlasted OFA in five sets in the semi-finals of the Section 10 Class C girls volleyball playoffs on Thursday.

The two teams will now get set to meet for the the Class C title next Tuesday at SUNY Canton in the first of three straight championship matches starting at 3 p.m.

Salmon River 3, Canton 0: At Fort Covington, the Lady Shamrocks won by scores of 25-13, 25-14, 25-14 led by Nicole Smoke with 11 points, 10 assists, six aces, three kills and one blocks. Cassie Boardway fashioned eight points, four kills, two aces and one kill. Jackie Benedict generated five points, four kills and two aces while Kasennakohe David (9 kills, 1 ace, 1 assist), Meg Durant and Raven Oakes each served up four points.

“The girls play well together tonight,” noted caoch Nicole Deshaies. “Their serves were consistent and they were aggressive at the net. Potsdam has a good offensive team that can put the ball down and they can also receive well. Next week will be tough.”

For Canton, Beth Pearson tallied eight points, three aces and two kills followed by Tara Facey with six assists three points and one ace and Cianna Willmart with four kills and one point.

Potsdam 3, OFA 2: In a see-saw battle from start to finish, the host Lady Sandstoners won by scores of 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20, reeling off the final five points of the fifth set to claim the win.

Brittany Barr led OFA with 17 points, 11 digs, eight aces and five kills. Felicia Barr added 17 digs, 10 kills, eight points and three aces. Olivia Bender contributed a career-high 22 assists and five digs. Katrina Couperous tallied 18 digs and nine points while Taylor Fisher worked the net for 11 kills and four blocks while serving up 10 points.


In the two Class D semi-final matches on Thursday, Chateaugay downed Madrid-Waddington in three straight 25-10, 25-10, 25-8 while Edwards-Knox swept Tupper Lake 25-16, 25-14, 25-14. The Class D final is slated for Tuesday at SUNY Canton starting at 5 p.m. followed by the Class A final between Franklin Academy and Massena at 7 p.m.
