Canton teams advance past N-N in Section 10 Class C soccer semis


The Canton Central boys and girls teams advanced to the Section 10 Class C soccer finals with contrasting wins over their Norwood-Norfolk counterparts in semi-final round action on Thursday.

The Canton boys steadily pulled away to a 6-0 win and will now get set to take on Brushton-Moira in the Class C championship game on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. while the Canton girls outlasted the Lady Flyers 2-0 in overtime and will face defending champion Tupper Lake in this year’s Class C title game on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. Both championship games are slated for Massena Central’s Mike Nicholas Field.


Canton 6, N-N 0: At Roger Dusharm field, Bryant Wentworth netted a pair of goals and helped set up another as the Golden Bears built a commanding 3-0 halftime lead. Jake Watson chipped in a goal and assist. Jacob Oatman, Francesco Palumbo and Adam Lawrence connected for the other goals and Matt Mende drew a pair of assists.

Scott Wight fielded the two shots he faced as Canton improved to 8-4-4. Garrett Waite recorded 20 saves in the season finale for the Flyers (2-14).

B-M 2, St. Lawrence 1 (2OT): In Brushton, Lauren Trayner scored from Adam Martin just 1:50 into the first overtime to lift the Panthers past the Larries (4-10-2).

Traynor opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 8:10 mark of the first half but Ian Lynch pulled SLC even seven minutes later assisted by Matthew Frary.

Taylor Tallman made 11 saves backstopping the win as the Panthers improved to 11-4-2 overall. Tyler Savage handled 15 shots for the Larries, who playing just their second season as a varsity team in the NAC.


Canton 2, N-N 0 (2OT): At the SUNY Canton turf field, the Lady Flyers battled the top-seeded Golden Bears to a scoreless draw through 80 minutes of regulation before surrendering solo goals in each of the 10-minute overtime sessions.

Emily Rexford broke through for the eventual game-winner off a lead pass from Lindsay Proulx six minutes into the first OT then Proulx added the insurance goal off a direct kick with 6:02 left in the second.

Katie Clemmer started in goal for Canton (10-6-1) was left late in the first half after colliding with a Lady Flyer going for a 50-50 ball and had one save to her credit. Hilary Wilcox handled crease duties the rest of the game and posted another two stops in preserving the shutout.

Mickey Frego had 11 saves as the Lady Flyers closed out their season at 7-9-1overall.

Tupper Lake 2, Brushton-Moira 1: In a semi-final matchup of defending co-champions, the host Lady Panthers opened the scoring when Kendra Mills converted on an assist from Kenzie Traynor in the 30th for the only goal of the first half before the Lumberjacks fashioned a pair of unanswered second half goals to come away with the win and earn a chance to defend their Class C title.

Katie Stuart tied the game with 17:43 left in regulation assisted by Madison Kelly. Lauren Bouck struck for the game-winner eight minutes later unassisted.

Brooke Dewyea made six saves backstopping the win as Tupper Lake improved to 8-7-0 while Ashley DeBeer handled seven shots for B-M (12-5-0).
