Ogdensburg lot temporarily houses Canadian buses on their way to California

The empty lot that once housed Ogdensburg’s Park Plaza shopping center has become a temporary home to 10 large, mass transit buses as they make their way from Ottawa, Ontario, to Riverside, Calif.

Fifty NewFlyer buses that formerly combed the streets of Ottawa will be making their way to southern California using Park Plaza as a storage location before the long drive.

The 60-foot-long articulating buses will be refurbished and resold by Transit Sales International.

“We’re the largest acquirer of used transit buses in the country,” said Bus Acquisition Director Elliot F. Carson.

Each bus has roughly half a million miles on it, but Mr. Carson said his company specializes in making them run like new.

“We take a bus down to the frame and remanufacture it,” he said.

Transit Sales International will also do a more basic overhaul if the customer wants.

“[The price] ranges anywhere between $70,000 and $200,000,” said Mr. Carson. “A new bus like that is half a million dollars.”

According to Mr. Carson, P.J. Simao of TOPED Development LLC, Alexandria Bay has allowed Transit Sales International keep 10 buses at a time on the property.

Each bus will be driven to California where there are already 12 of the NewFlyers in the process of being rebuilt.

Mr. Carson said the process of moving the buses from Canada to California should be complete by mid-December.
