Ogdensburg Lions tap Philip Mitchell for the organization’s highest honor

The Ogdensburg Lions Club has named member Philip R. Mitchell the recipient of its Melvin Jones Service Award.

The award, the organization’s highest, will be given at the Lions 57th Charter ceremony on Thursday.

Mr. Mitchell joined the Lions in 2001. One year later, he was appointed treasurer, a position he still holds.

“I’m honored to receive this award,” he said Thursday. “The Lions do a lot for the community.”

The award is named for Melvin Jones, the Chicago businessman who founded Lions International in June 1917. Lions International is the largest service organization in the world.

Mr. Mitchell is also a past recipient of the Robert J. Uplinger Award, which is a state Lions service award.

Mr. Mitchell is an information technology manager for the Ogdensburg accounting firm of Whalen, Davey and Looney.

He and his wife, Leanne, have two daughters, Alison and Elizabeth.
