Monkton, Vt. — Steven L. Dean died suddenly at home surrounded by family on November 23, 2012. Mr. Dean was born on September 19, 1949 in Oswegatchie, NY to parents John and Merwyn Dean. He earned a B.S. at SUNY Postdam in 1971 and a MS in Geology from the University of Vermont in 1973.

He married Sally I. Rising of Brightwaters, NY in 1973 and started a career in hydrogeology at Whitman and Howard, Inc. of Boston, MA. In 1981, he started his own company, Geologic Services Corp., in the cellar of his Hudson, MA home. He and his wife grew the company to 120 employees with offices in 5 states. In 2000, he sold the company to his employees and retired.

In his retirement, he moved to Monkton, VT where he pursued his many outdoor hobbies, including hunting, fishing, woodworking and making maple syrup for family and friends. He enjoyed spending part of each winter in the Florida Keys. He was also caretaker of his mother’s 1898 childhood farmhouse in Parishville, NY.

Mr. Dean is survived by his wife, Sally R. Dean, of Monkton, VT, sister Memorie J. Munson of Williamsburg, VA, brother Larrie J. Dean of Midlothian, VA, daughter Carrie S. Deegan of New London, NH, son Micah J. Dean of Gloucester, MA, and his four grandchildren Aiden, Phoebe, Haley and Fisher, to whom he was affectionately known as “Hapa.”

Calling hours will be held at Seymour Funeral Home in Potsdam, NY on Mon., Nov. 26, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be held on Tues., Nov. 27 at 11:00 AM at the same location. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association at www.wcha.org.
