WEST GENESEE - The Massena Central boys hockey team opened the 2012-13 season by dropping a 4-1 decision to defending New York State Division I champion Suffern in the first round of the West Genesee Tournament on Friday.
John Costa led the winning effort, scoring the opening goal at 2:20 of the second period then sealing the win with a power play goal with 6:50 left in regulation.
The Mounties went ahead 2-0 just nine seconds after Costas first when Justin Tiso struck for an unassisted goal but the Raiders pulled back to within one when Brantley Adams controlled a loose puck along the boards then wristed a shot into the back of the next at the 3:44 mark of the middle frame.
Kevin Hill restored the two-goal lead at 2:34 of the third period before Costa put the game out of reach.
Nick Modica turned aside 16 shots backstopping the win while Connor Paquin logged 25 saves for the Raiders, who are slated to play in the tournament consolation today at 2:30 p.m.
In the lone NAC Division I game played on Friday, the Islanders blanked Canton 2-0.
