MALONE - The Norwood-Norfolk Central hockey team opened the 2012-13 NAC DIvision II season by dropping a 3-1 decision to Franklin Academy at the Malone Civic Central on Wednesday.
The Icemen got off to a promising start when Kaiden Pickering connected off an assist from Austin Cousineau at 12:49 of the first period but the Huskies scored three goals over the final 7:25 of the second period to come away with the win.
Bailey Conklin tied the game with a power play goal set up by Kelsey Head at the 7:35 mark. Trevor Henderson finished off an assist from Shawn Mulverhill with 1:28 left in the middle frame to make it 2-1 before Tanner Studlack added the insurance goal just 43 seconds later assisted by Conklin and Cameron Daniels.
Joey Brown turned aside 42 shots working the crease for the win while Brandon Richards had 20 saves in the losing effort.
The Icemen return to action next Wednesday when they play their home opener at the Dominic Zappia Arena against Tupper Lake starting at 7 p.m.
OFA BLANKS TUPPER
In the lone other NAC Division II boys hockey action on Tuesday, OFA blanked Tupper Lake 3-0.
After a scoreless first period, the Blue Devils got two straight special teams goals by Brandon Mullin off of assist from Joe Giglio early in the second, the first on the power play at the 4:12 mark and the second two minutes later short-handed, for all the scoring they would need.
David Prudhomme made 18 saves posting the shutout while Marcus Richer stopped 32 shots for the Lumberjacks.
