SLUs McRae Voted Hockey ECAC Rookie of the Month
CANTON - St. Lawrence University first-year student Abbey McRae has been selected the Hogan Hockey/ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Month for November by the leagues coaches.
McRae had an outstanding offensive month for the Saints, posting a team-high six goals including two on the power play and one game-winner. The London, ON native recorded her first collegiate hat trick against Yale while adding goals against conference foes Brown, Princeton and Colgate. McRae closed November with a +8 rating overall, and was chosen out of an impressive nominee list that included Janelle Ferrara (Yale), Shannon MacAulay (Clarkson), Emerance Maschmeyer (Harvard), Ashlynne Rando (Colgate), Laura Stacey (Dartmouth) and Taylor Woods (Cornell).
Abbey has been able to transition to the college game quickly, said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. She has a great work ethic which has been a big part of her success this season.
The leagues coaches also selected Harvards Jillian Dempsey as ECAC Hockey Player. Dempsey extended her current point-streak to 23 games. McRae and the Saints will be in action this weekend when they host Penn State University for a pair of games at Appleton Arena on Friday and Saturday, December 7 and 8.
CUs Howe Named ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Month
POTSDAM - For the second time this season, Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) of the Clarkson University womens hockey team has been recognized for her outstanding play when she was named Hogan Hockey/ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Month for November. Howe also earned the honor for October.
The junior netminder has helped the Golden Knights to their best start ever at 13-3 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
Howe backstopped the Knights to a 6-1 record for the month of November, including a pair of wins over Top-10 ranked foes, and to a No. 2 ranking in the national polls. Howe had six games where she allowed just one goal, including three 2-1 victories and was 5-0 in League games. Howe posted 36 saves on 37 shots in 3-1 win at Quinnipiac (11/16), registered 29 saves in 2-1 victory over No. 3 Cornell (11/30) and recorded over a .940 save percentage in six of the seven games she started.
Clarkson closes out the 2012 portion of the schedule this weekend with a home-and-home series with Syracuse. The Knights host the Orange on Friday in a 7 p.m. game at Cheel Arena, and then face off against Syracuse in Central NY on Saturday at 3 p.m.
SUNY Potsdams Salvarinas Chosen Goalie of the Week
POTSDAM - The Eastern College Athletic Conference West has announced that SUNY Potsdam hockey player Dawna Salvarinas (Mississauga, Ontario) is its Goalie of the Week for the week ending Dec. 2.
Salvarinas stopped all 28 shots she faced in a 2-0 victory over conference foe Cortland on Dec. 2. The junior was at her best in the third period, making 12 stops in the final 20 minutes. This season, the goaltender is
2-2 with a goals-against-average of 3.03 and a .901 save percentage.
Salvarinas has two shutouts this year and three in her career.
The Bears are back in action this weekend when they host a pair of games against St. Michaels College this Friday and Saturday at Clarksons Cheel Arena starting at 3 p.m. both days.
