BENCH WARRANT - MASSENA - Village police picked up Steven M. Chambers II, 24, of 544 Ruddy Road, Chase Mills Thursday afternoon on a bench warrant issued by St. Lawrence County Court Judge Jerome J. Richards. The warrant alleged Chambers violated the conditions of his probationary sentence.

Chambers has been charged with attempting to steal cash and a ring from Natasha R. Coons, 23, of Chase Mills, a woman he has known since elementary school. The incident took place midday in September 2011 near the corner of Parker Avenue and East Orvis Street.

According to court documents, Ms. Coons traveled to Massena on Sept. 12, 2011 after receiving what she viewed to be subpar offers for her engagement ring from Argent Silver and Coin Shop, Potsdam, and Carbino’s Jeweler’s Ogdensburg.

Ms. Coons said she decided to attempt to sell the ring to Paquette Jewelry, Massena. She was accompanied by a male friend, and they reportedly contacted Chambers, who was in Massena, to ask him for his assistance in finding Paquette’s store.

Chambers reportedly showed them the way to the store and sat with them in the car “for a minute” talking about the ring before a black pickup truck entered the parking lot.

He then allegedly left the vehicle and started talking to a male in the truck, she said.

As the pair were about the exit the vehicle, Charles D. Curtis told police that Chambers returned. He then reportedly returned to the passenger side of the vehicle, stuck a gun through the window and said, “Give me everything you got,” he said.

Mr. Curtis said a struggle occurred as Ms. Coon’s was attempting to flee the scene.

“My arm then flies up, and I pushed the gun towards the ceiling. Steven has his other arm in the window holding onto the window. The gun then dropped out of his hands onto my lap. I picked up the gun and started to hit Steven’s arm to get him to let go of the window,” he said.

Mr. Curtis’ efforts were apparently successful, as Chambers then fell to the ground after approximately two blocks. Ms. Coons told police she looked back and saw Chambers get off the pavement.

Chambers was transported to the Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Vt., for treatment of his injuries and evaluation and was released the next day.
