Massena boys rally for hockey tie with Canton; Potsdam skates past Tupper


Massena Central rallied to gain a 2-2 tie with Canton Central while Potsdam Central notched a 6-1 decision over Tupper Lake in NAC boys hockey matchups on Wednesday.

The lone other boys hockey action of the night saw Franklin Academy turn back non-league rival Saranac Central 6-5.

Massena 2, Canton 2 (OT): At the Canton Pavilion, the Raiders scored the only goal of the first period and the only goal of the third to salvage a draw against their Division I rivals.

Anthony Cortese opened the scoring at 11:22 of the first period by finishing off a play set up by Zach Kozsan and Dalton Mullin. The Bears tied the game at 8:17 of the second period when Andrew McCormick relayed a lead pass from Matt Mende into a breakaway goal. Josh Parker put Canton ahead when he tipped home a low shot from the left point by Brandon Rodee for a power play goal with 4:21 left in the second period.

The Raiders pressured for the equalizer from the start of the third period and finally broke through with 1:50 remaining in regulation when Dylan Stone wristed home the rebound of a shot from the left wing by Ian Wilson. Mullin earned his second assist of the game on the final goal of the game as the teams skated through five minutes of scoreless overtime.

Connor Paquin turned aside 20 shots working the Massena crease for the win while Jake Watson stood tall making 38 saves backstopping the Canton effort.

Both teams return to the ice for NAC games on Saturday with the Raiders (5-3-1, 3-1-1) traveling to Ogdensburg to take on OFA starting at 1 p.m. and the Bears (2-5-1, 0-1-1) playing host to Potsdam at the Pavilion beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Potsdam 6, Tupper Lake 1: In Tupper Lake, freshman Chad Varney netted three goals and helped set up another as the visiting Sandstoners built a 2-0 lead then answered the lone Lumberjack goal in the second period with the final four goals of the game.

Logan Ford tallied two goals and an assist. Robbie Scott scored the other Potsdam goal and logged two assists. Trevor Keleher also fashioned a pair of helpers while Keenan O’Gorman and Max Warden each finished with solo assists.

Jacob Crary made 11 saves in the winning effort while Tyler Nilsson recorded 37 stops for the Lumberjacks (0-7-1, 0-6).

The Sandstoners (5-2, 2-2) are slated to face Division I rival Canton Central at the Canton Pavilion on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
