Massena, Potsdam boys pull away to Central hoops wins


The Massena Central and Potsdam Central varsity boys basketball teams pulled away to convincing NAC Central Division road wins on Tuesday.

Massena 74, Salmon River 38: In Fort Covington, Joey LaBelle scored all of his game-high 27 points on nine three-pointers as the Raiders ran out to decisive 42-18 halftime lead. Zack Rusaw contributed 15 points toward the winning effort followed by Xavier Viskovich with 12, Zevon Viskovich with nine, David Phillips with four and Robert Cameron with three. Logan Deshane and Rhoades Tarbell closed out the Massena scoresheet with two points each.

Josh Hynes paced the Shamrocks with 11 points followed by Russ Oakes with eight, Justin Bigness with seven, Kiio Jacobs with six, Dylan Whitehead with three and Austin Leduc with two.

The Raiders (6-4, 3-2) are slated to host Canton on Tueday while Salmon River (0-6, 1-8) travels to Canton this Friday.

Potsdam 73, Gouverneur 34: In Gouverneur, Konnor Bigwarfe anchored a balanced effort with 20 points, including a pair of three-pointers, as the Sandstoners ran out to a 21-7 lead by the end of the first quarter then outscored the Wildcats 24-8 in the third before going on to post their seventh straight win after having opened with a pair of losses. Shawn Clark chipped in 14 points while Will Coleman and Nick Vaccaro contributed 10 points apiece. Jacob Bryant and Thomas Hobbs finished with six points each followed by Dan Stone with five and Duquan Pitts with two.

Mark Horne led the way for the Wildcats (2-8, 1-5) with 14 points. Anthony Way added eight while Dustin Hutton and Devon Cox both finished with four.

The Sandstoners will look to stay on track Friday night when they play host to undefeated Central Division leading Franklin Academy starting with the JV game at 5:30 p.m.

OFA 85, Canton 39: At Jerry Hourihan Gym, the visiting Blue Devils raced out to a 27-8 lead by the end of the first quarter en route to beating the Golden Bears in the other Central Division game of the night. Colin Ross paced OFA (9-1, 5-1) with 19 games followed by Breton LaRose with 18, Kinnon LaRose with 14 and Matt Pierce with 13.

Evan LaPoint led Canton (4-5, 2-4) with 14 points. Bryant Wentworth chipped in six followed by Francesco Palumbo with five.


A trio of interdivisional games on Tuesday saw St. Lawrence Central turn back Colton-Pierrepont 66-32, Norwood-Norfolk beat Parishville-Hopkinton 63-35 and St. Regis Falls drop Brushton-Moira 63-27.

SLC 66, C-P 32: At Brasher Falls, the Larries outscored the Colts 30-13 by halftime as Zane Ramsdell worked the floor for a game-high 19 points while pulling down 10 rebounds, notching seven steals and handing out four assists. Cody Meacham added 12 points and four steals. Josh White (5 assists, 5 steals, 3 blocks), Corey LaBarge and Jessi Greer tallied six points each followed by Tyler Savage with four while Bradley Francis and Todd Ramsdell closed out the SLC scoresheet with two points apiece.

Patrick Martin and Brett Hoyt anchored the Colts’ offense with six points each. Gyle Dominy and Ethan Knight added five points apiece followed by Riley Doyle with four while Scott Boyce and Bruce Avery each netted three.

SLC (3-6, 2-3) is slated to play at P-H on Friday while C-P (4-5, 2-3) travels to Brushton-Moira.

N-N 63, P-H 35: In Norfolk, the Flyers steadily pulled away from a 13-7 first-quarter lead for their first win of the season. Brandon Sawyer tossed through a team-high 15 points followed by Cody Rust with 14 and Garrett Waite with eight. Dan Devine and Kyle Steenberg added seven points apiece. Kyle Martens and Connor Pernice chipped in four points each. Brett Barkley and D’kota Wright accounted for the other Flyer points with two points apiece.

Mike Burns led all scorers with 18 points in the losing effort. Anthony Pullano added seven followed by Ryan Snyder with five, Tanner Wilson with three and Mike Cook with the other two.

The Flyers (1-10, 1-6) host St. Regis Falls on Friday at 6 p.m. while the Panthers (0-7, 0-5) are slated to welcome SLC on Friday.

SRF 63, B-M 27: At St. Regis Falls, the Saints led 10-8 after the first quarter then broke the game open by outscoring the Panthers 43-12 over the next two frames as they improved to 11-0 overall and 5-0 in the NAC East Division. Brandon Votra fired through 20 points and Corey LaBounty chipped in another 19 to lead the winning offense.

For the Panthers (4-4, 3-1), Loren Traynor scored nine points and Alex Burnett struck for another eight.


In the only North Division matchup on Tuesday, Tupper Lake (6-4, 4-2) outlasted Madrid-Waddington 62-57 in double overtime.

Mitch Keniston led the winning effort with a game-high 23 points. Brock Tarbox and Austin Gagnier contributed 11 points apiece.

Richard Wright had 22 points for the Yellowjackets (6-4, 3-3). Maurice Rease added 16 points followed by Jacob Barney with nine.


In West Division action Tuesday night, Edwards-Knox overwhelmed Clifton-Fine 102-16, Lisbon outscored Morristown 48-45 and Harrisville beat Hermon-DeKalb 72-41.
