The Northern New York Community Foundation board of directors recently approved three additional grants, totaling $16,700, as part of its year-end grant cycle.

Executive Director Rande S. Richardson said the board approved a $12,000 grant, made possible in partnership with the Dyson Foundation, to expand Operation Snowstorm from Lowville Academy and Central School to Beaver River Central School, Beaver Falls. Both schools will use the grant to provide winter clothing for students in need.

“This was the first year we have been able to extend it,” Mr. Richardson said. “There were more significant resources this year to fund it at both schools.”

The Operation Snowstorm grant was one of three recently announced by the Community Foundation that had been approved by committee, but weren’t included on the list of December grants. The board met in mid-December to approve grant recommendations.

Also recently awarded was $3,000 to Watertown Noon Rotary to assist with the repair and refurbishment of the fitness trail at Thompson Park. Although in existence since 1989, the “World Trail” fitness loop had been in disrepair, caused by neglect. Since 2011, the Rotary Club has been working to try to spruce up the trail.

The third grant was a $1,700 award to the North Country Library System to support the purchase of reusable mailing bags for people in Jefferson, Lewis or St. Lawrence counties who otherwise would be unable to access library materials.

Mr. Richardson said the board will meet again in March.
