MASSENA - The Massena Central varsity boys basketball team relayed a 45-16 halftime lead into a 76-40 NAC Central Division win at home over Canton Central on Tuesday.
Zack Rusaw led a balanced Raider offense with 19 points. Logan Deshane chipped in 13 followed by Zach Fregoe and Xavier Viskovich with eight apiece. Joey LaBelle and Rhoades Tarbell both finished with seven. Tyler Haas connected for another six followed by Zevon Viskovich with four, Rob Cameron with two and Rory Corcoran with one.
Evan LaPoint had a team-high 10 points in the losing cause. Ed Bortnick and Charlie Ames added eight points apiece followed by Ryan Caldwell with five and Scott Wight with four. Nick Archibald and Eugene Hitchman each netted two while Cody Peters tallied a free throw for the Bears (4-7, 3-5).
The Raiders (7-5, 4-2) are slated to travel to Potsdam on Friday for the first of two key mid-season matchups against the Sandstoners. The two teams are slated to square off again next Tuesday night in Massena.
In the other Central Division action on Tuesday, Salmon River fell to Gouverneur 58-47 and OFA overwhelmed previously undefeated Franklin Academy 82-49.
Gouverneur 58, Salmon River 47: At Fort Covington, the visiting Wildcats built a 33-22 halftime lead en route to downing the Shamrocks.
Josh Hynes fired through a game-high 20 points in the losing effort. Russ Oakes added nine points followed by Justin Bigness with eight. Dylan Whitehead and Chance Monette each contributed four and Sky Sunday accounted for the other two for Salmon River (1-10, 0-8).
Mark Horne led Gouverneur (3-8, 2-5) with 18 points. Curt LaPlante tossed through another 11 followed by Anthony Way with 10 and Devin Cox with nine.
OFA 82, FA 49: The host Blue Devils led 31-11 at the end of the first quarter and went into halftime with a commanding 52-16 lead in handing the Huskies (12-1, 7-1) their first loss while improving to 6-1 in the division and 10-1 overall.
Breton LaRose anchored the winning effort with 30 points, including three of the eight three-pointers fashioned by the Blue Devils. Matt Piercey also had three threes in a 17-point effort followed by Pat Cosmo with 14 points and Kinnon LaRose with 11.
Nate Monette had 10 points in pacing the HUskies. Harvey Smith and Mitch Gallagher each netted nine.
In the only NAC North Division game of the night, St. Lawrence Central posted a 72-44 decision at home over Norwood-Norfolk.
Zane Ramsdell led a balanced SLC offense that saw five players connect for a three-pointer with 19 points to go along with eight rebounds, six assists and five steals. Cody Meacham tallied 13 points, seven boards and five assists as the Larries built a commanding 16-4 lead in the first quarter then outscored the Flyers 37-24 in the second half. Tyler Savage tossed through another 12 points while Josh White generated eight points, six assists and four steals. Jessi Greer added six points followed by Shane Fuentes with five, Todd Ramsdell with four, Corey LaBarge with three and Bradley Francis with the other two.
Dan Devine paced the Flyers with an 18-point effort. Cody Rust and Kyle Martens chipped in six points apiece followed by Aaron Chandler with six. Jake Matthie and Ryan Gay added three points each. Kyle Steenburg and Dustin Fisher closed out the Flyer scoresheet with two points each.
The Larries (6-6, 5-3) are slated to compete in the Darcy Tournament at Lisbon starting next Tuesday against Canton at 5:30 p.m. N-N travels to Ogdensburg on Friday to take on OFA starting at 5:30 p.m. as well.
In a pair of interdivisional encounters, Madrid-Waddington turned back Colton-Pierrepont 39-22 and Brushton-Moira dropped Parishville-Hopkinton 67-32.
M-W 39, C-P 22: In Madrid, the Yellowjackets used a 14-5 third-quarter surge to break away from a 15-11 halftime lead as Greg Thompson led all scorers with 10 points. Maurice Rease chipped in eight points followed by Richard Wright with seven, TJ Gagnon with six, Terry Crump with five, Dillan Putney with two and Jacob Barney with one.
Scott Boyce and Patrick Martin anchored the C-P scoring with six points each. Gyle Dominy added four followed by Bruce Avery with three and Riley Doyle with two.
B-M 67, P-H 32: In Brushton, the host Franklin County Panthers raced out to a 23-4 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back for the win. Adam Martin led all scorers with 13 points. Alex Burnett and Justin Lavarnway contributed 12 points apiece. Taylor Tallman and Jacob Jacques each finished with eight followed by Jacob White with six.
Ryan Snyder paced the St. Lawrence County Panthers with 12 points. Tanner Wilson added six followed by Mike Burns with five, Anthony Pullano with four, Mike Cook with three and David Eames with the other two.
The NAC West Division matchups on Tuesday saw Harrisville outlast Heuvelton 56-54, Hammond stop Clifton-Fine 65-20, Morristown handle Hermon-DeKalb 61-31 and Edwards-Knox remain undefeated via a 53-42 win over Lisbon.
