MASSENA — Joseph R. McMahon, 21, of 29 Elm St., was arrested by village police Wednesday afternoon after allegedly fleeing from the scene of a domestic dispute on Park Avenue.

Mr. McMahon is accused of putting his hand over the mouth and throat of his girlfriend, Barbara Marshall, at 2:39 p.m. at her residence, shoving her on a bed and breaking her cellphone in the process. Police arrived shortly after being called by Ms. Marshall, but Mr. McMahon had fled to his house, where police arrested him at 4:30 p.m.

Accused of violating an order of protection that was issued in June, he was charged with first-degree criminal contempt, criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, fourth-degree criminal mischief and second-degree harassment.

Mr. McMahon was arraigned by Justice James M. Crandall in Massena Town Court and sent to St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, on $10,000 bail or $20,000 bond. He is to appear in Massena Town Court.
