M-W girls ride fast start past B-M, Kelly nets 48 in Salmon River win over SRF


BRUSHTON - The Madrid-Waddington varsity girls basketball team relayed a strong start into a convincing 60-32 win on the road over Brushton-Moira in the lone NAC North Division matchup staged on Tuesday.

Freshman Olivia Parmeter fired through a game-high 17 points followed by Tess Knight and Bridget Beldock, who connected for five three-pointers, with 15 apiece as the Lady Yellowjackets worked their way to a 17-4 lead in the first quarter before going on to raise their North Division record to 5-0 and overall mark to 12-1. Jenny King contributed seven points toward the winning effort followed by Desiree Pryce with three, Shelby Kendall with two and Katie Marcellus with one.

Arielle Gary led the Lady Panthers (5-8, 1-6) with 12 points. Caitlyn LaPage added nine followed by Danielle Trimm with four and Jenna Dufrane with three. Alex Trickey and Miada McCarthy closed out the B-M scoresheet with two points each.

M-W plays host to North Division rival Norwood-Norfolk on Thursday starting at 5:30 p.m.


In other NAC girls basketball action on Tuesday, a pair of interdivisional games saw Salmon River overwhelm St. Regis Falls 86-24 and Canton roll past Tupper Lake 66-17 while the lone East Division contest had Colton-Pierrepont beating Parishville-Hopkinton 52-28 and Hammond handling West Division rival Edwards-Knox 65-10.

Salmon River 86, SRF 24: In Fort Covington, the Lady Shamrocks (11-3) led 26-5 by the end of the first quarter and never looked back as Abby Kelly poured through a career-high 48 points on 18 field goals, two three-pointers and six free throws. Jaiden Mitchell and Taylor Francis contributed 12 points apiece followed by Jocelyn Martin with six. Zaagaate Jocky and Peighton Laffin added three apiece and Samantha Ghostlaw accounted for the other two.

Brittany Rondeau led the Lady Saints (0-11) with 10 points. Kiana Stowell chipped in six.

Canton 66, Tupper Lake: At Jerry Hourihan Gym, the Lady Bears ran out to a 20-5 lead by the end of the first quarter then sealed the win with a 25-2 fourth-quarter run as Emma Rexford anchored a balanced offense with 21 points, including three threes. Tori Daley added 10 points toward the win followed by Jamie DiSalvo with eight for Central Division leading Canton (13-1, 9-1).

Katie Stuart accounted for the majority of the Tupper Lake (8-6, 4-2 North) offense with 13 points. Sidney Kulzer and Jessie Weigand each added two.

Hammond 65, E-K 10: The Lady Devils (13-1, 10-0 NAC West) shutout the Cougars in the second and third quarters as No. 6 New York State Class D rank Hammond used a balanced attack led by Alyssa Crosby’s 10 points, nine rebounds and seven steals and Cassie Whalen’s 10 points and nine rebounds in the win. Mikayla Horton generated 10 points and six assissts for the winners while Courtney Bova collected 10 points. Brianna Langtry chipped in seven points and seven boards and Gabby Marshall provided six points.

Heather Finnerty paced E-K (1-13, 1-10 NAC West) with four.
