The Potsdam Central boys basketball team closed out the regular season by pulling away to a 67-36 win over Central Division rival Gouverneur while Norwood-Norfolk suffered a 76-41 interdivisional loss to Chateaugay in NAC action on Thursday.
Potsdam 67, Gouverneur 36: In a game moved up a day due to the threat of a major snowstorm on Friday, the host Sandstoners ran out to a 21-7 lead by the end of the first quarter and stretched the lead to 44-12 by halftime in turning back the Wildcats.
Konnor Bigwarfe, one of three seniors honored before their final home regular season game, led all scorers with 26 points. Classmates Owen Mitchell and Tom Hobbs tossed through 15 and six points respectively as Potsdam improved to 12-5 heading into the Section 10 Class B playoffs.
Our seniors have been a big part of our program and theyve all had great basketball careers here, noted coach Brooks Bigwarfe.
Junior Will Coleman chipped in 16 points toward the win over Gouverneur while sophomores Ashler Herrick and Jake Mitchell closed out the Potsdam scoring with two points each.
Mark Horne led the Wildcats (4-14, 3-9) with 12 points followed by Troy Gates with seven while Anthony Way and Devon Cox each finished with four.
The two teams will square off again in the first round of the Class B playoffs next Thursday in Potsdam at 6 p.m.
Chateaugay 76, N-N 41: In Norfolk, the Bulldogs (15-3, 10-1) outscored the Flyers 53-20 over the second and third quarters en route to posting the covincing road win.
Cody Rust paced N-N (2-16) with 12 points. Dan Devine added six followed by Kyle Steenberg with five. Kyle Martens, Garrett Waite and Conner Pernice chipped in four apiece followed by Brandon Sawyer with three, Dustin Fisher with two and Aaron Chandler with one.
Noah Bowles led the Bulldogs with 28 points. Trevor Lang added seven followed by Seth Young and Jordan Martin with six each as 13 Chateaugay players shot their way onto the scoresheet.
The Flyers will now gear up for the Class C playoffs starting on Wednesday when they take to the road for an opening-round game.
In the other NAC boys basketball matchups on Thursday, Franklin Academy posted a 96-21 interdivisional win over Brushton-Moira while a pair of West Division encounters saw Heuvelton beat Hammond 52-40 and Lisbon outscore Morristown 49-29.
FA 96, B-M 21: Nate Monette tossed through 21 points followed by Connor Dailey with 19 as the Huskies (17-1) surged to a 50-8 halftime lead. Kody Mulverhill added 13 points, Mitch Gallagher 11 and Austin Lamay 10.
Devin Benko paced B-M with five points followed by Alex Burnett with four.
