POTSDAM - The town and village of Potsdam received an unexpected windfall this week from Brookfield Power.

Each municipality received $97,948 from the company as part of a long-standing agreement in which Brookfield would pay local governments in return for tax breaks received from the now-defunct New York State Empire Zone program.

Town officials said that they thought the tax breaks ended along with the program, but Brookfield still received a smaller-than-previous tax break and passed along a proportional payment to the town and village.
