Elizabeth A. Durant


Massena: Elizabeth A. (“Betty”) Durant, 84, of Ransom Avenue, passed away on April 3, 2013 at the St. Regis Nursing Home, surrounded by her loving family. Betty was born in Massena on March 25, 1929, the daughter of Alfons and Anna (Medwick) Smith. She graduated from Massena Central High School in1946 and earned B.A.’s in English and Spanish from the College of St. Rose in 1950. She then attended Albany State Teachers College where she received her Master’s degree in guidance. Betty taught high school in Rockville Center and Ellenburg Depot, NY before returning to Massena Central High in the late 1950’s to teach English and Spanish. On August 8, 1959, she married James E. Durant at Sacred Heart Church in Massena. In 1966, she returned to teaching English at Holy Family High School in Massena, where she remained until it closed in 1975. She continued her teaching career at Massena Central until her retirement in 1991. She was a member of College Club, the NY State Teachers Association, the Massena Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the bereavement group at Sacred Heart, and the Juvenile Conference Committee. Betty also volunteered for Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley. Betty Durant enjoyed travel, reading, entertaining for family and friends, playing bridge and knitting, as well as swimming and snow skiing in her younger years. She is survived by three daughters and a son: Michele Durant of Cornwall, ON, Mary Mittiga (Frank) of Massena, Ann Treers (Don Dickinson) of Massena, and James Durant of Los Angeles, CA; three grandchildren: Abby Treers of Massena, and Sean and Anthony Baca (Cornwall, ON), one brother, James “Jigger” Smith of Houston, TX, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Jim, in Sep 2000 and three brothers, Tony, (Troy, NY), and Charles and Herman Smith, both of Massena. Contributions may be made to the “Betty Durant Memorial Scholarship” fund which has been set up at the Massena Savings and Loan Bank, 255 Main Street, Massena, NY 13662.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at 12:00pm at Sacred Heart Church in Massena with the Rev. Joseph Elliott officiating.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at the Phillips Memorial Home in Massena on Monday, April 8 from 2 - 4pm and 7 - 9pm.
