Clarkson Facebook page hits 10K milestone

POTSDAM - Clarkson University’s Facebook page hit a milestone in April by surpassing 10,000 followers.

The university began the page several years ago as part of its engagement efforts. Since then, it has turned into a virtual town square for prospective and current students, alumni, family, community members and anyone else interested in Clarkson to connect with the university and each other.

The Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ClarksonUniversity) features news, achievements and profiles of Clarkson faculty, students and alumni. It also promotes upcoming Clarkson events and shares photos from those events and candid pictures of campus life.

Clarkson interacts with its Facebook followers in multiple ways, such as an “alumni question of the week” meant to provide current and prospective students with advice, Clarkson trivia questions and vintage photos from the University, Potsdam and old yearbooks.

“Clarkson defies convention as a technological institution with a highly collaborative community. We use Internet-based technologies to share information, as well as authentically engage our audiences in the Clarkson experience, whether it be the 17-year-old prospective student, a Clarkson sophomore, parents or our alumni,” said Kelly O. Chezum, vice president for external relations. “Social media expand the opportunities we have to seamlessly connect and engage the Clarkson community in ways that simply were not possible a decade ago.”

Clarkson’s Twitter account, @ClarksonUniv, also hit a milestone in late March by surpassing 5,000 followers. The University also ramped up its Instagram account, @ClarksonUniv, over the last year.

Clarkson is also finding new ways to engage on social media, such as sponsoring a “Best of Clarkson” Instagram photo contest in February for students and encouraging hockey fans to Tweet at Cheel Arena games for a chance to get their message on the scoreboard.

Numerous departments within the university have also established a social media presence of their own, including the Office of Student Life, the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, the Reh Center for Entrepreneurship and the Career Center.
