POTSDAM - A.A. Kingston Middle School has a new principal.

Tuesday night the Potsdam Central School Board of Education voted 7-0 to hire Mark Bennett, who is currently the principal at Case Middle School in Watertown.

“I’m very excited to be coming to Potsdam,” the Waddington resident said when reached at his home following Monday’s meeting.

Mr. Bennett said he grew up in Ticonderoga and attended college at SUNY Potsdam.

“I student taught at Norwood-Norfolk and I never left,” he said. “I love the north country. It’s a beautiful area and I’ve been here for 18 years. It’s my home.”

Potsdam Central School Superintendent Patrick H. Brady said that prior to becoming a principal, Mr. Bennett taught in the middle school at Norwood-Norfolk for eight years.

Mr. Bennett is expected to begin in Potsdam on July 1 and will receive a salary of $78,000. Mr. Brady said that he beat out a field of 17 other applicants.

“We are very excited to have Mr. Bennett as an addition to our administrative team and the Potsdam community,” Mr. Brady said. “He has considerable experience both as an administrator and as a teacher in the middle level.”

Mr. Bennett will be following Jamie Cruikshank, who is leaving the district to become the Superintendent at Norwood-Norfolk Central School. Mr. Cruikshank has been principal at A.A. Kingston since 2007.
