WINTER PARK, FLORIDA – Mr. William H. Wittman, Jr., 88, formerly of Massena, peacefully passed away, August 28, 2013 at Hospice of the Comforter in Altamonte Springs, Florida. He had been in failing health since April.
Bill was born July 4, 1925 in Rochester, New York, the son of the late William H. and Irene Herring Wittman. He was a graduate of Edison Tech School in Rochester. Bill entered the United States Marine Corps in 1944 serving for a time in Tsingtao, China before being honorably discharged in 1946. He graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering, where he met his wife, Pauline F. Creazzo. They were married in 1948 and enjoyed 44 years of marriage before her death on September 18, 1992.
While living in Massena, he was a civil engineer for Alcoa. He worked there for 18 years before moving to New Jersey where he worked as a Registered Professional civil engineer with an engineering consulting company. He was a communicant of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Winter Park, Florida and a former communicant of St. Marys Catholic Church in Massena. While living in Massena, Bill was a Scoutmaster with Troop 49 for over four years. Bill enjoyed stamp and coin collecting, stained glass design work, woodworking, gardening, fishing, and reading.
Surviving Bill are his children, Irene L. Jones and her husband, George of The Woodlands, Texas; Frances M. Wittman of Altamonte Springs, Florida; and William J. Wittman, M.D. and his wife, Moira Shea, M.D. of West Falmouth, Massachusetts and his grandchildren, Laura E. Keeling and Emily C. Wittman. Bill is also survived by his sisters, Caroline Strub and Alice Wittman, both of Clifton Springs, NY; and Ruth Earls of Cary, North Carolina.
Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, 100 N. Main Street, Massena, NY, Friday, September 6th, 3:00 – 6:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, September 7th, 10:00 AM at St. Marys Catholic Church with Rev. Scott D. Fobare, celebrating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
