BRASHER FALLS - A Nightengale Elementary School teacher will be moving to another elementary school next week, but this time to take over as principal.
Johnathan R. Hirschey was appointed by the St. Lawrence Central School Board of Education Wednesday night to take over as their elementary principal. He begins Monday at a prorated salary of $77,500 under a three-year tenure track probationary appointment.
Mr. Hirschey will replace Amy Hornung, who had served as interim principal during the 2012-13 school year. Superintendent Stephan J. Vigliotti Sr. has spent part of his 2013-14 school year filling elementary principal role.
Hell start Monday. That was contingent on him meeting all the qualifications, Mr. Vigliotti said.
He has not officially tendered his resignation yet at Massena Central, but board members there will be asked to approve his resignation during their next session.
I know that hes spoken with his supervisors. Ive actually spoken with the supervisors. Theyre fully anticipating this. They have already made arrangements, Mr. Vigliotti said.
Mr. Hirschey was chosen from seven candidates who were interviewed by a group representing several different stakeholders in the St. Lawrence Central School District.
We use the shared decision-making process here. We had a committee composed of all stakeholder groups to include teachers, parents, community members and board members. We brought seven candidates through this process. From that group of seven people, the top three that they came up with, they sent to me and I conducted interviews. Johnathan, through the committee work, was very highly rated by the committee. They really liked him, Mr. Vigliotti said.
He said Mr. Hirschey comes with qualifications that will make him an asset to the St. Lawrence Central Elementary School.
He has an outstanding background in literacy, having been a reading teacher and literacy coach. I think his subset of skills will fit very nicely into some of the needs that we have at the elementary, he said.
Mr. Vigliotti said this will be the first administrative position for Mr. Hirschey, who served an administrative internship with Massenas curriculum coordinator.
Were very pleased that hes joining the staff. We very much look forward to the positive attributes that he brings to St. Lawrence Central Elementary School, he said.
