MASSENA - After hearing concerns from North Raquette Road resident Kathy Nezezon, members of Massenas town board voted unanimously this week to request a speed limit reduction on the North Raquette Road.
Ms. Nezezon said while there is a sharp bend in the road with signage indicating a 45-mile per hour suggested speed limit few, if any, people slow down while going around the bend. Nobody goes 45, she said. I would like to have a reduction or a school bus stop sign, she said.
Town Councilman Albert N. Nicola said the board could make the request, but he couldnt guarantee it would be approved.
Weve fielded requests like this before, he said. Sometimes theyre heeded and sometimes theyre not.
Town Supervisor Joseph D. Gray explained that in order to get a speed limit reduction the town must make the request to the county, who them must make the request to the state.
He said the process is the same regardless of whether the street in question is a county, state or town road.
I dont want you to get your hopes up, Mr. Gray said, adding the town was once told they couldnt lower the speed limit on one of their own roads.
