COLTON - The town of Coltons Winterfest Planning Committee has begun organizing the annual wintertime festival to be held Jan. 24 - 26.
The theme this year is Jazz it up January which will be highlighted by a jazz concert on Saturday night at Colton-Pierrepont Central School following the annual spaghetti dinner.
The committee, chaired by Colton Town Board member Grace Hawley, plans to finalize the schedule by Jan. 1.
During our first meeting, she explained, we reviewed the schedule from last year and began discussing possible new twists on past activities, new wintertime activities which could be included and new ideas for using facilities in town. Our local school art teacher, for instance, will be working again with students to produce murals promoting Art Around Town and plans to use the new pergola at Three Falls Park in the hamlet of South Colton as one of the display sites.
Any organization, business, group or individuals planning to organize a Winterfest activity needs to submit an Event Information Form for scheduling and publicity purposes. The one-page form is available at the Town Hall. Scott Muller is collecting forms and also can assist in filling them out. He can be reached by calling 315-244-9956.
Each year during Winterfest Weekend the town recognizes its Citizen of the Year. The award honors a town resident who is an active volunteer and who exemplifies the adage neighbors caring for neighbors. Anyone wishing to nominate someone should contact Grace Hawley at 315-262-2439. Nominations should be submitted by December 1st for committee members to discuss during December.
The next town of Colton Winterfest Planning Committee meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 7 in the Colton Town Hall, 94 Main St.
Anyone interested in organizing a 2014 Winterfest Weekend activity or being involved in planning overall is encouraged to attend.
