MASSENA - Two Massena Central School parents asked board of education members Thursday night to address what they said was bullying of team players, including their daughters, on the volleyball team.
Julie Malone and Sue Ellen Jacobs alleged their daughters and other members of the varsity volleyball team had been subjected to bullying this season, and they asked board members to look into it and take action. Neither women specifically mentioned the name of the person or persons who was allegedly doing the bullying.
My daughter is a member of the varsity volleyball team. There have been incidents of verbal, emotional and mental abuse toward players, what I consider bullying, Ms. Malone said.
She told board members she understood the district policy was for zero tolerance with bullying, and she asked board members to address the situation.
Im very concerned about the well-being of the team, Ms. Malone said, telling board members she was concerned about the effect it was having on their players now and in the long term.
I hope we can address these issues and hopefully get things settled so the program can get back on track, she said.
Ms. Jacobs shared similar concerns experienced by her daughter. While she said she had nothing but good things to say about Massena schools, the volleyball situation has been hardd for her (daughter) to endure.
But it impacted not only her daughter, according to Ms. Jacobs.
My daughter is not the only student being bullied, she said.
Ms. Jacobs said she had attempted to go through the proper channels to get the situation resolved, but had not yet had any success and was turning to the board of education members to address the behavior of a supposed adult.
This is an issue that needs to be resolved immediately, she said, asking the board members to put themselves in the shoes of the parents who had students on the team.
Interim Superintendent William W. Crist deferred any comment until Friday, after they had an opportunity to address the situation in an executive session that was held following the regular portion of Thursdays meeting.
