The Potsdam Central and Massena Central varsity boys soccer teams pulled away to convincing NAC Central Division wins on Tuesday.
Potsdam 5, Salmon River 1: In Fort Covington, the Sandstoners (10-5, 7-4) raced out to a 3-0 lead 15 minutes into the game and never looked back for the win. Ebuka Ononye scored the first of his three goals in the first minute off an assist from Pat Normandin. The duo switched roles for the second goal in the 6th minute before Ononye capped the decisive scoring surge in the 15th minute off another assist from Normandin.
Dylan Gruneisen converted off an assist from Ononye eight minutes into the second half to make it 4-0 before Ononye closed out the Sandstoner scoring in the 26th minute assisted by Ian Vitek.
Josh Hynes spoiled Potsdams bid for the shutout when he connected from Kahatiron Perkins with less than seven minutes left in regulation.
Ashler Herrick made three saves in the winning effort while Austin Leroux posted 16 stops for the Shamrocks (5-10, 3-8).
Potsdam wraps up the regular season on Friday at home against OFA while Salmon River welcomes Massena. Both finales start at 4 p.m.
Massena 4, FA 1: At Mike Nicholas Field, the Raiders took advantage of a strong autumn breeze at their backs to build a 3-0 lead by halftime before going on to reverse the Huskies in their second meeting of the season.
Jason Hammill opened the scoring 22 minutes into the game assisted by Tyler Young. Brendan Broderick launched the ball into the back of the net from 40 yards out four minutes later to make it 2-0 before Ryan Moffitt closed out the first-half scoring surge when he finished off a play set up by Hammill with 10 minutes remaining.
Moffitt pushed the Massena lead to 4-0 just 10 minutes into the second half assisted by Forrest Brockway before the Huskies (8-6-1, 6-5-1) got on the board nine minutes later on a goal by Isai Paradones.
Cameron Marsh made 10 saves going the distance between the pipes for the Raiders (5-10-0, 4-7-0), who close out the regular season on Friday at Salmon River.
Tuesdays game was the final home game for five Massena seniors. Honored along with Brockway, Marsh and Young before the game were classmates John DSouza and Dan Elman.
OFA CLINCHES BANNER
The other Central game of the day saw OFA clinch sole possession of the regular season title with a 2-0 win at home over Canton.
Conor Hannan broke through for an unassisted goal with three minutes left in the first half and that would stand as the game-winner. Hannan then drew the lone assist on the insurance goal by Dillon Binion late in the second half as the Blue Devils moved to 9-0-2 atop the division and 11-1-2 overall heading into their regular season finale at Potsdam on Friday.
Jacob Sias made six saves working the crease for the shutout while Scott Wight handled nine shots for the Bears (10-3-1, 8-2-1).
The NAC West Division varsity boys soccer encounters on Tuesday saw Harrisville blank Heuvelton 3-0 to remain undefeated atop the division standings, one point ahead of Lisbon which beat Hammond 5-2, while Edwards-Knox blanked Clifton-Fine 5-0. The West Division banner is the only regular season boys soccer title still up for grabs as Harrisville hosts Lisbon in the decisive game this Friday.
