SLC girls hockey drops season debut to Beekmantown

BRASHER FALLS - Defending playoff champion Beekmantown relayed the momentum of a quick scoring burst into an 8-0 interdivisional win over St. Lawrence Central in a high school girls hockey matchup at the Tri-Town Arena on Tuesday.

The visiting Lady Eagles took early control when Brittany Miner and Madison Beauchemin connected for goals just 12 seconds apart in the fifth minute of the game. They went on to add another goal in the opening frame before netting three more in the second and two in the third.

Miner finished with a pair of goals. Clara Giroux and Lauren O’Connor both tallied a goal and two assists. Amy LoTemplio, Katie Matott and Kyle Regan struck for the other goals while Connor Lapierre and Abby Bone each logged solo assists.

Holly Zeldenrust stood tall working the SLC crease for 41 saves in the season opener for the Lady Larries under first-year head coach Dan Rondeau. Kayleigh Bell turned aside 10 shots backstopping the shutout.

The Lady Larries will be right back in action this evening as they get set to take on Alexandria Bay starting at 7 p.m. at the Tri-Town Arena.

In the lone other girls hockey game on Tuesday, Canton posted a 5-2 interdivisional win on the road over Oswego while the only NAC boys hockey action saw Franklin Academy outlast Division II rival OFA 2-1.

Canton 5, Oswego 2: In Oswego, the Lady Bears were unable to hold an early 2-0 lead before regrouping the score the last three goals of the game for their second win in as many outings this season.

Margret Troiano opened the scoring at the 3:17 mark assisted by Natalie Giglio and Samantha Mace. Giglio made it 2-0 with 6:12 left in the first period before the Buccaneers pulled even on back-to-back goals by Allison Rogers at 10:27 of the first period and 4:22 of the second.

Troiano put Canton back on top to stay when she finished off a play set up by Blake Orosz with 1:44 left in the middle frame. Troiano made it 4-2 with an unassisted goal just 47 seconds into the third period before Angelina Vecchio closed out the scoring with 5:15 remaining assisted by Mary Kait Mace and Kelly Copeland.

Elizabeth Burke had 18 saves in the winning effort.

FA 2, OFA 1: In Malone, the teams skated through two scoreless periods before the Huskies were able to outlast the Blue Devils in the third for the win.

Jake Henning broke through for the opening goal assisted by Trevor Cooley and Loghan Harris at the 1:06 mark but OFA knotted the score with four minutes left when Jon Tayler finished off a play set up by Burke Comeau and Jared Barr.

But the Huskies notched the game-winner at the 12:51 mark when Bailey Conklin struck for an unassisted goal.

Joey Brown made 30 saves working the crease for the win in the season opener for FA. David Prudhomme turned aside 21 shots in the losing effort as OFA slipped to 1-2 overall.
