POTSDAM - Some holiday shoppers decide to get their purchases out of the way on Black Friday, while others choose the route of cashing in on last minute deals the week before Christmas.

But plenty of savings can be found and activities enjoyed this weekend in Potsdam as part of the annual Holiday Shopping Weekend.

The festivities will run all day Saturday and will continue Sunday, with over two dozen businesses scheduled to participate in the weekend.

“The first weekend in December has traditionally been the big shopping weekend here in Potsdam,” Potsdam Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Marylee E. Ballou said. “We try to get people to shop locally before the big shopping Saturday that will be happening soon. For the most part, since we have some specialty shops here, there are a lot of things you can find here that you wouldn’t find elsewhere.”

Some of this weekend’s participating businesses also took part in last weekend’s “Small Business Saturday.”

A handful of businesses will have extended store hours this weekend, including Northern Music and Video. The business will have their “Super Music Sunday Sale” tomorrow.

The Potsdam Chamber of Commerce will be offering chamber gift certificates at the various businesses.

“The chamber sponsors a gift certificate give away. We give away $100 in chamber certificates and also $50 gift certificates. They are good in over 130 businesses in Potsdam,” Ms. Ballou said. “Places like the Cornerstore and the Misty Hollow offer great products and service. We do have some new businesses like Main Street Chocolates and Chilly Delight frozen yogurt participating this year.”

Main Street Chocolates, located at 1/2 Main Street, opened on Nov. 12, while Chilly Delight premiered on Nov. 22 at its 57 Market St. locale.

The Holiday Shopping Weekend coincides with a few other events around town.

The lighting of the Robert Plumb Memorial Tree will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday next to the Clarkson Inn. On Sunday, the Potsdam Museum will have an open house and memorial tree lighting, with the Toyland: A Century of Fun! exhibit opening at that time as well. The exhibit explores 100 years of toys.

The fourth annual Merry TubaChristmas concert will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church. The concerts are in their 40th year and are performed throughout the country.

Tubas, euphoniums and other members of the tuba family will conjoin to play a wide variety of seasonal music.

“We wanted to add a musical activity that people could enjoy on the weekend. The Crane Candelight Concert is on Sunday so we wanted to provide a musical activity on the Saturday evening as well,” Ms. Ballou explained. “Merry Tuba is a national event and the concerts are held across the country and across the world. It’s a really nice event and people came from the Plattsburgh area last year to perform.”

Ms. Ballou noted that the first and second weekends in December are typically the most popular, making the timing of the Holiday Shopping Weekend no coincidence. “I think this weekend gives a lot of local shops the opportunity to get a boost with holiday shoppers. We want it to be successful for our member businesses. That’s the whole point of the weekend,” she said. “It’s greatly appreciated by the businesses to have that extra push.”

Businesses participating in this weekend’s Holiday Shopping special include: Potsdam Agway, MVP Sports, Potsdam Humane Society, Main Street Chocolates, Misty Hollow, Potsdam Food Co-op, Argent’s, CORC Thrift Store, SummerHaven, Northern Music and Video, T&R Wines and Liquors, Harris Medical, Today’s Hair & Day Spa, Friends of the Potsdam Library, The Cornerstore, Twisted Turtle, Chesire Cat, St. Lawrence County Arts Council, Potsdam Museum, University Bookstore, Maple Run Emporium, Willow Tree Florist, Chilly Delight, Little Italy, Arby’s and Potsdam Farmer’s Market.
