DMV drop boxes make vehicle registration renewals easier

POTSDAM - The St. Lawrence County Clerk’s Office is setting up drop boxes around Ogdensburg to encourage people to renew their vehicle registrations locally instead of mailing them to Albany.

The county receives 12.7 percent of the revenue of all the vehicle registration renewals processed by area Department of Motor Vehicle offices, County Clerk Mary Lou Rupp said Tuesday.

“This is something people aren’t aware of,” Mrs. Rupp said. “They receive them in the mail so they send them back. But the more registration renewals local DMVs process, the more money for the county.”

Net revenue for the county is approaching $2 million this year – the highest ever, Mrs. Rupp said.

“Our revenue has increased every year but we want to continue that increase,” she said.

The drop boxes are located outside Price Chopper, 2981 Ford St. Ext., and at both entrances of the St. Lawrence Federal Credit Union, 333 State St.

“I tried to pick locations that should make it convenient for people,” Mrs. Rupp said. “You can just pop it in the box before you go to the grocery store and you don’t need postage.”

Registration renewals put in the drop boxes are processed by the Ogdensburg office of the Department of Motor Vehicles.

“I think after we see how it goes in Ogdensburg first as a test run before we successfully put boxes elsewhere,” Mrs. Rupp said. “Many places could benefit from drop boxes. There is not a DMV in Potsdam.”
