MASSENA - The sponsors are starting to step forward for free holiday skating at the Massena Arena.
Recreation Superintendent Richard A. Boprey said that as of Tuesday afternoon theyll have approximately 18 hours of free skating at the arena over the Christmas and New Years holiday period. The dates and times must still be penciled in based on ice time needed by other organizations, he said.
The sponsors so far this year include Phillips Memorial Home, the Massena Elks Lodge, An Italian Affair, Harte Haven Shopping Center, Amvets Post 4, Massena Rescue Squad, Massena Rotary Club, Massena Central School Dress Down Day, Moser Custom Trim Shop and the Hazelton Memorial Fund.
We send out letters every year (to sponsors), Mr. Boprey said.
He noted they also send out three or four letters to new organizations every year asking if they would like to sponsor ice time. The cost is $75 for one hour or $125 for two hours.
Its paid for holiday skating for people who come in. They just show up... and its paid for, which is nice, he said.
Some of the sponsors have been part of the effort since it began. They include Phillips Memorial Home, which had originally suggested the idea of offering free holiday skating over the Christmas and New Years period while students were on Christmas break from school.
Among the new sponsors this year are An Italian Affair and the Hazelton Memorial Fund. The Hazelton Memorial Fund booked two hours of ice time, according to Mr. Boprey.
Right now were at 18 hours of ice paid for, he said.
Whoever books the ice time can customize it any way they want, the recreation superintendent said. For instance, if they want to hold relay races or have specific music playing, the Recreation Department can arrange that, he said. Others may want specific time slots when they know families will be in the area to take advantage of the free skating.
Well customize it any way they want to, he said.
