Potsdam, SLC girls hockey teams fall short

Potsdam Central dropped a non-league decision to the Islanders while St. Lawrence Central fell to Section 10 rival Canton in high school girls hockey matchups on Wednesday.

Islanders 3, Potsdam 2: In a non-league game at the Clayton Arena, the visiting Lady Sandstoners worked their way to a 2-0 midway through the second period before the Islanders quickly reversed the deficit with three goals in the span of 1:31 late in the middle frame.

Kelsey Green opened the scoring 12 minutes into the game with an unassisted goal before Ally Miller made it 2-0 at 6:46 of the second off an assist from Kallie Grant.

The Islanders got on the board at the 9:19 mark with an unassisted goal by Moriah Simons. They tied the game 36 seconds later when Mikaela Benny converted off an assist from Molly Aznoe. Just 55 seconds after that, Sydney Aubertine capped the decisive outburst by finishing off a play set up by Miranda Kolb and that would hold up as the game-winner.

Sidney Molnar (7 saves) and Allie Compeau (8 saves) shared crease duties for Potsdam while Kayla McCabe turned aside 21 shots in the winning effort.

The Lady Sandstoners, 1-2 overall, make their Section 10 debut this Saturday by hosting Salmon River at Pine Street Arena starting at 11:45 a.m.

Canton 5, St. Lawrence Central 1: In a Section 10 matchup staged at the Tri-Town Arena on Wednesday, the visiting Lady Bears broke open a close game with three second-period goals and went ahead 4-0 early in the third before the Lady Larries produced their only goal when Paige DeBeer broke through for an unassisted goal with 2:08 left in regulation.

Natalie Giglio opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 41 seconds into the second period and Margret Troiano struck at the 6:15 mark for the eventual game-winner. They both later added solo assists toward the winning effort. Blake Orosz netted a pair of goals and Mary Kait Mace tallied a singleton while Lizzy Christy, Elizabeth Collins and Mirna Husinec each logged solo assists.

Holly Zeldenrust stood tall working the SLC crease for 43 saves while Elizabeth Burke stopped 14 shots for the Lady Bears (3-1, 1-0).

The Lady Larries (0-5, 0-2) are slated to play on the road against Section 10 rival Potsdam Central this Monday at Pine Street Arena starting at 4:15 p.m.
