HOPKINTON - The Hopkinton Town Board appointed their new highway superintendent, Stephen A. Green, on Monday evening.
Mr. Green was victorious in a tightly contested race for the post in Novembers elections. The Democrat defeated Republican candidate Francis Frank Barney by a count of 150 to 146.
The town board had the option Monday of either appointing Mr. Green to the position now, or holding off on the decision until the end of the year.
We now have the final, official results and we welcome Steve, Town Supervisor Susan Wood said. So, we need to decide whether to appoint him now to the end of the year, and then he can take over Jan. 1, or wait.
The motion to appoint Mr. Green, effective Tuesday, was made by board member Amanda L. Potter and seconded by board member Gilbert Sochia.
Former highway superintendent of 13 years, Ronald Streeter, retired in July. Since then, James Hollenbeck had been filling on an interim basis.
I would like to thank Jim for stepping up to the plate and taking over, Ms. Wood said.
Mr. Green, who has lived in Hopkinton for 31 years, is under a two-year unexpired term.
I worked for eight years with the St. Lawrence County Highway Department among other jobs, he said. I havent been around the town here for a while, so I need to go around in the spring and see what shape everythings in. We have a small work force and were going to do the best we can to work together.
