MASSSENA – After a courageous battle with cancer, Mr. Daniel K. Burke, 69, of 10 Wilson Ave, peacefully passed away with his family by his side on Saturday morning, December 14, 2013 at Massena Memorial Hospital.
Daniel was born June 2, 1944 in Cornwall, Ontario, the son of the late James Sr. and Leonne Doyon Burke. He attended schools in Cornwall. After moving the United States, he enlisted in the US Army, actively serving two years and then two years of the Army Reserves, before his honorable discharge. On November 20, 1965, he married Donna J. Dumas at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Massena.
Daniel first worked for Penn Central Railroad and helped in the construction of Cornwall Bridge before going to work at General Motors. He worked in the Research and Development Department there for many years until his retirement in 2004. Danny also owned and operated Burkes Insulation and Construction for many years. Danny took great pride and enjoyment in helping the less fortunate any time, but especially during the Christmas season. During the Ice Storm, he delivered food to many community members who were unable to get out. He volunteered with Massena Meals on Wheels and was a member of the American Legion Post #79 and the Gerald R. Roy AMVETS Post #4. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, watching hockey, football, and basketball, hunting, and had a great love for sports cars, especially the Corvette. In addition, Danny enjoyed boating, snowmobiling, and socializing with his friends. But perhaps his greatest enjoyment was the cherished times he spent with his family, especially at his grandchildrens sporting events.
Danny is survived by his loving wife, Donna; two sons and their wives, Shawn and Jodi Burke and Mark and Heidi Burke, all of Massena; his grandchildren, Sierra Thomas, Shanley, Jeanelle, and Dani-Lyn Burke; his sisters, Phyllis and Joseph Ogle of Kansas; Nancy and Pierre Fortier of Montreal; his brother, Neil Burke of Cornwall; his sister-in-law, Lorraine Burke of Cornwall; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Danny was predeceased by a brother, James Burke, Jr.
Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. The members of the American Legion and AMVETS will meet at 7:15PM for a Veterans memorial service. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday 12:00 NOON at the Church of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Donald J. Manfred, celebrating. Burial with full military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery.
