Don’t miss your Olympic opportunity.

Whiteface Mountain, minutes from Lake Placid, will once again host the FIS Freestyle World Cup, with mogul competition for men and women starting January 15th with US Team Members officially to be named for the Olympic Team headed to Sochi on January 17th. Decisive Aerials competition will be held on January 18th.

This year winter sport athletes, some local and others transplanted to Lake Placid, will be getting ready for the Olympics in hopes of having the opportunity to compete in Sochi. They practice and compete at Whiteface and in and around Lake Placid. You will find Olympic hopefuls at the bobsled, the ski jumps, Nordic venues, on the ice, and other venues. Whiteface and Lake Placid, making dreams of glory happen.

To give you a Whiteface update, the ski area now has new glades called Rand’s Last Stand glade, which adds an additional 4.7 acres to the mountain’s already 283 acres of skiable terrain and 3,430 of vertical. The glade is also Whiteface’s first new trail in more than five years.

I personally am impressed with Whiteface’s capacity to produce manmade snow. The mountain has added 35 low energy snow guns that will provide efficient snow coverage on Easy Street, Broadway and Excelsior. The mountain has also purchased an energy efficient boom fan snow gun that will be used to cover the mountain’s Lower Valley trail. Whiteface snow makers are capable of getting a trail open in two days to excellent standards.

Also noteworthy, a new Pisten Bully 600 Winch Cat has been brought on to boost Whiteface’s fleet of cats and groomers.

For 23 consecutive years, Whiteface and Lake Placid has been selected as the top destination for Off -Hill activities by readers of SKI Magazine. The 2014 survey also tabbed Whiteface Mountain as the 10th top ski resort in the eastern United States. Whiteface also received kudos for Après Ski Activities (No. 4), Challenge (4), Scenery (5), Character (6), Dining (9) and Overall Value (No.10).

This spring, SnowEast Magazine readers chose Whiteface and Lake Placid as New York State’s number-one ski resort. The more than 6,000 participants in the survey also named Whiteface Lake Placid as the east’s second overall favorite ski resort and the east’s most scenic.

Most recently, Whiteface Lake Placid was included in the Smarter Travel’s “10 Best International Ski Destinations.” Whiteface Mountain was one of only three ski resorts in the United States to make the list.

While you are enjoying Whiteface and Lake Placid take in other activities as well including bobsledding, cross country skiing, or any other activity that makes the Olympic Mountain a unique ski and family destination.
