CORNWALL ISLAND, Ont. - Multiple Stanley Cup winners, NHL all-stars and the Montreal Canadiens all-time leading scorer will be participating in a charity hockey game on Jan. 17 against the Akwesasne Selects at the Anowarakowa Arena.
The event was announced by the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne recently, with the doors set to open at 6 p.m. and the puck will drop at 7:30.
The charity hockey game will be a first for the Anowarakowa Arena, which is located in Cornwall Island, Ont. on the Akwesasne reservation.
Weve never done this in the past at the arena so we are very excited to be doing this for the first time, arena administrative assistant Mamie David said. Our manager, Geraldine, is in contact with the president of the Canadiens alumni hockey team.
We received an email from the Mohawk Council, and I made the call and it started from there in September, arena manager Geraldine Jacobs added.
Tickets are $25 and are available at the arenas location, 36 Arena Road, Akwesasne, Ont. Those with further questions can call Ms. David or Ms. Jacobs at 613-936-1583.
The Montreal Canadiens Alumni will be coached by the franchises all-time leading scorer, Guy Lafleur. There are 11 former Habs currently slated to take part in the charity event, which will be slightly shorter than a regulation NHL contest.
It is three periods and it is more for fun. I believe they will all be 15-minute periods. At some point in time, our young novice team will be on the ice with the Canadiens players. This will be towards the end of the first or second period and will be a part of the regular game, Ms. David said. We expect it to be full and our capacity is 2,000. We have VIP tickets for sale as well which include the meet and greet on the same night.
The Selects squad is made up of amateur hockey players, all who formerly played in college or other leagues and are over the age of 35.
They all reside around here, except one from Florida and one other player. They are pretty high profile players, Ms. Jacobs said.
The event will benefit the arena, Akwesasne minor hockey and the Junior B Wolves team.
We gave 500 tickets to the Akwesasne minor hockey (team) and they keep the sales. They sold all of their tickets and their total sale was $10,000, Ms. Jacobs said. Junior B Wolves will be running the Chuck-A-Puck and the food sale and the 50-50 raffle. The Junior B Wolves are a league for 15- to 21-year-olds. The funds are mostly to help out the arena with some of the costs. Its pretty much an event that can partner with the main people here who use the arena. It is a good fundraiser for the arena.
I think much of Cornwall and Cornwall Island root for the Canadiens, so the fans will be excited. Our ticket sales are doing quite well. The fans who are coming from the American side have to report at customs in Cornwall first. (This address) is 36 Arena Road, Cornwall Island, Ont., she said.
The 11 Montreal Canadiens alumni include Richard Sevigny, Mathieu Dandenault, Guy Carbonneau, Steve Shutt, Gilbert Delorme, Rick Green, Normand Dupont, Karl Dykhuis, Pierre Dagenais, Jocelyn Lemieux and Mr. Lafleur.
