CANTON — Flames engulfed a DHL delivery truck Thursday night in Canton after it got stuck at the end of a customer’s driveway.

Canton and Pyrites volunteer fire departments responded to the blaze at approximately 8 p.m. at 3160 County Route 21. There were no injuries reported.

Pyrites Fire Chief Matthew B. Kielmeier said that the fire was under investigation but that an engine fire was the likely cause.

The driver of the vehicle, who would identify himself only as Keith, age 26, said he had gotten stuck in the driveway after making his final delivery of the night to Barry A. Carlson Jr. He was trying to back out to return to his base in Syracuse, where he lives, that his troubles began.

“I pulled in and tried to back out and it was just stuck. The ice broke and there was no way out,” the driver said. “I walked down the street to find some help, and when I walked back it was just on fire. I don’t know what happened. The temperature gauge wasn’t running high or anything.”

Standing in the road, Mr. Carlson watched in amazement as flames engulfed the truck. Mr. Carlson said he takes students to Northern Ireland through a program at St. Lawrence University and has seen plenty of vehicle fires; however, the last place he expected to see one was in his front yard, he said.

“But hey, at least I got my wife’s Christmas gift first. It’s a very nice red sweater,” Mr. Carlson said, chuckling. “Seriously though, thank God the driver wasn’t in there. I don’t know how he would have gotten out.”
