PIERREPONT - The Pierrepont Town Board is in the process of acquiring land in the hamlet of Hannawa Falls that will benefit Helping Hands of Potsdam, Inc..
The parcel is located on Church Street, immediately adjacent to the site of Helping Hands. The group distributes food, furniture, household items, and financial assistance to families and individuals in need.
Town attorney Eric J. Gustafson noted that potential liability issues would be taken care of with the agreement before it was set in stone.
Well make that as part of the license. Well take care of any issues. ... Its a licensed agreement so well make conditions that if (Helping Hands) is going to not use it that they restore it, Mr. Gustafson said.
They needed a license to use a portion of the real property of the town for purposes of their septic system. The system would be placed underground and would not impair the towns use of the property, according to the agreement.
At one time, the Methodist Church had part of that land. Behind the church there was a horse barn and this little chunk of land went with it, Town Supervisor Thomas E. Latimer said. All we did was give (Helping Hands) a small sliver of land so that they could extend their septic system and they could also have a soup kitchen; so that it would meet state requirements for a soup kitchen.
The town will license the group to use the land in exchange for the consideration of Helping Hands of Potsdam Inc.s promise to maintain the property above their septic system to the satisfaction of the town.
Mr. Latimer said that the public will be notified of the licensing agreement, and once a month passes the purchase price will be known.
This will be posted for 30 days, so the public will know what were doing, he said. (The agreement) will be reworded so that the purchase price will just be for public service. Its not final. Its just a letter to let everybody know whats going on.
