SARANAC LAKE - The Massena Central girls hockey team bounced back from its first loss of the season with a convincing 6-1 intersectional win on the road over Saranac Lake on Thursday.
Coming off a disappoint 6-0 setback against Section 10 rival Potsdam last Saturday, the Lady Raiders struck for a pair of quick first-period goals before working their way to a decisive 5-0 lead early in the third.
Freshman KC Herne opened the scoring 5:43 into the game assisted by sophomores Molly OConnell and Abbey Paduano. OConnell then struck for the eventual game-winner just 34 seconds later assisted by junior Bailey Dillabough.
The Lady Raiders doubled their lead in the second period as freshman Katie MacCuaig connected from classmate Mikenna Merry at the 5:10 mark and junior Mia Jermano made it 4-0 just under five minutes later by finishing off a play set up by freshman Bailey Thomas and MacCuaig.
Sophomore Raechel Davis netted the fifth Massena goal just 1:40 into the final frame assisted by MacCuaig and classmate Abbie Paquin.
The Red Storm spoiled the Lady Raiders bid for the shutout when Kameron Snyder converted from McKayla Duffy and Jillian Martin with 1:33 remaining but MacCuaig restored the five-goal lead 51 seconds later with an unassisted tally.
Freshman Kyrsten Stone worked the Massena crease for 10 saves backstopping the win while freshman Lindsay Reeve turned in a stellar 51-save performance for Saranac Lake (1-9).
The Lady Raiders (8-1) are slated to play at perennial Section 7 powerhouse and defending state tournament champion Beekmantown at the Ameri-Can North Sports Center in Plattsburgh on Saturday at 4 p.m. Saranac Lake plays host to Ithaca tonight at 7 p.m.
