Norwood-Norfolk hockey coach Paul Durant provided his team with a simple game plan and knew that it would take diligent execution to implement the plan in Saturdays NAC Division II game at OFA.
The Icemen methodically carried out every facet of the plan, shift by shift, gaining their second 4-0 win of the season and third straight shutout over the Blue Devils.
The only other NAC game of the day saw Canton outscore Tupper Lake 5-3.
This is just a tough place to win and it is tough to score against their goalie Dave Prudhomme. We stressed all week that we had to control the neutral zone, work hard at cycling the puck low and keeping a man back to slow their breaks, said Durant after the Icemen scored three third period goals in a span of 2:44 in taking over the Division II standings at 3-1.
Our line of Kaden Pickering, Zeb Brown and Austin Cousineau is really quick and they had a big game. But overall it was a nice road win from a team effort. Everyone did what they had to do, our guy in goal Brandon Richards made some good saves early.
Pickering (2 goals), Brown (2 assists) and Cousineau figured in three of the four goals with Pickering netting the game-winner from Zeb Zagrobelny at 6:21 of the first period where Prudomme made 15 of his 47 saves.
Cousineau triggered the third period burst sweeping out of the corner and scoring from Brown at 5:40. Cody Munson followed at 5:40 tipping home a shot from Shane Cryderman on a cycle play started by Tristan Harvey.
Pickering completed the scoring at 6:13 on a rebound in a scramble where Brown and Tyler Fobare drew assists.
Norwood-Norfolk is a very quick and skilled team. We did a good job of hanging in there for two periods and Dave Prudhomme made a lot of tough saves to keep us in the game, said OFA Coach Jon Frederick who have his team (3-4, 3-3 NAC) on the road Wednesday to Tupper Lake for an NAC Division II game.
We needed to score the first goal but we didnt and it is just tough where you arent scoring goals.
Canton 5 - Tupper Lake 3: Matt Mende and Mike Huber scored in the final five minutes of the third period as the Golden Bears (2-0 NAC, 4-4) broke away from a strong effort from the Lumberjacks (0-7-1,0-5-1 NAC) and goaltender TLs Derek Kope (32 saves) to gain an interdivisional win.
The Bears answered two TL rallies in the game.
Tanner Sanderson scored his second goal of the game after TL tallies by Thomas Sexton (1 goal, 1 assist) and Josh Fowler created a 2-2 tie.
The late Bear goals came in response to a Hudson Sparks 3-3 equalizer.
Sanderson scored off two Huber assists in the contest, Cody Moore finished with one goal and one assist and Nate Gibson and Josh Huiatt also passed out assists.
Jake Facey stopped 13 saves for the Bears.
